Phase IV, famed motion picture title sequence designer Saul Bass's sole directorial outing, opens in selected markets. Written by Mayo Simon (Futureworld, Marooned), Michael Murphy and Nigel Davenport star as a pair of Arizona scientists who discover that an unexplained cosmic incident has dramatically changed the genetic makeup of the local ant colony, rendering it with a rapidly evolving, cross-species, military-like hive mentality. A creepy, sci-fi parable with some impressive macro ant photography enhanced by a kaleidoscopic visual style befitting Basses title design reputation. Lynne Frederick co-stars as a local girl who finds refuge in the scientists' beseiged laboratory.
