A Star Is Born, adapted by Moss Hart from the original 1937 film's screenplay, and directed by George Cukor, premieres in New York. The third iteration of the classic narrative stars James Mason as a former popular movie star who drinks himself and his career into oblivion while his paramour (played by Judy Garland), an unknown singer he discovered and nurtured, becomes a huge star in her own right. The film marks Garland’s first screen appearance after a four year hiatus, and both she and Mason score Best Actor Academy Award nominations. In 1983, a 176 minute restored version of the film is released featuring two previously unseen musical numbers.
