Ed Wood, directed by Tim Burton, from a screenplay by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, based on the novel Nightmare Of Ecstasy by Rudolph Grey, goes into limited release. The semi-fictionalised biopic stars Johnny Depp as Edward D. Wood, an idiosyncratic, much-pilloried filmmaker, actor and author whose lower than low-budget directorial efforts from the 1950s, particularly the stupendously inept (but now cult favourite) Plan 9 From Outer Space, have earned him the dubious honour of being the worst director of all time. Martin Landau’s poignant performance as ageing Dracula actor Bela Lugosi justifiably wins the actor a Best Supporting Oscar.
