Terry Gilliam’s The Fisher King premieres. Reworking elements from the medieval Parsifal and the Holy Grail poem which Richard Wagner co-opted for his epic three-act opera in 1860, Richard LaGravanese's script posits Jeff Bridges as a despondent, suicidal ex-radio jock who is rescued one drunken night from a mugging by a raggedy hobo (Robin William) who immediately enjoins him to help him search for the Holy Grail. Burdened by a mutual tragedy, the jock and his rescuer embark on a redemptive, often surreal flight of fancy through a Manhattan nightscape where phantasmagorical images of a Red Knight on horseback segue seemlessly to a lyrical mass commuter waltz within the cavernous confines of Grand Central Station. Along with Brazil, one of Gilliam’s best films.
