Mike Nichols’ Postcards From The Edge premieres. Adapted by Carrie Fisher from her semi-autobiographical novel, Meryl Streep stars as Fisher’s alter ego, a young actress struggling to hold on to the remnants of a derailing career as her drug addiction spirals out of control. As the flamboyant former movie-star mother whose own alcohol-related issues don’t exactly make her ideally suited to minister to her daughter’s rehabilitation, Shirley MacLaine is at once poignant and hilarious. Co-starring Dennis Quaid, Gene Hackman and Richard Dreyfus
