Days of Heaven, written and directed by Terrence Malick, premieres in New York. Set in 1916, the film follows two itinerant lovers, played by Richard Gere and Brooke Adams, who travel to the Texas Panhandle where they find work harvesting crops for a wealthy farmer, played by Sam Shepherd. After hearing about the farmer’s poor health, the pair plot to wrest control of his property through a sham marriage but the deception quickly engenders tragic consequences. Praised for its stunning, pastoral imagery, the film consolidates the plaudits Malick  garnered earlier for Badlands and wins him a best director prize at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival.
