True Romance premieres nationwide. Directed by Tony Scott from a screenplay by Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary, Christian Slater stars as a comic book/kung fu movie geek who is plunged headlong into a blood and broken bone-littered, pseudo-noir imbroglio when he and the hooker he has just met and impulsively married go on the run with a suitcase full of the Mob’s heroin. While James Gandolfini uses Patricia Arquette’s face as a punching bag, Christopher Walken makes operatic mince meat out of poor old Dennis Hopper. A stoned Brad Pitt and a menacing Samuel L. Jackson hover unsteadily in the background. Pulpy, adrenalised, with a a high body count lacing of tarantino-esque violence.
