September 1 1948

Sorry, Wrong Number, written by Lucille Fletcher from her same-titled 1943 22 minute radio play, and directed by Anatole Litvak, premieres in New York City. Unfolding in real time and supported by expository flashbacks, the film pivots on Barbara Stanwyck's powerhouse performance as a wealthy heiress, alone and bedridden in a swanky Manhattan apartment, desperately trying to reach her philandering husband (Burt Lancaster) after accidently overhearing - on a crossed line - two men plotting her imminent murder. A shadowy, claustrophobic noir thriller that becomes the sixth best grossing release of the year. Ann Richards, Wendell Corey and William Conrad co-star.
