SWING TIME opens. Directed by Georges Stevens. Written by Howard Lindsay and Allan Scott, from the screen story Portrait of John Garnett by Erwin S. Gelsey. Classic musical comedy featuring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in their sixth and finest outing. The film's nominal plot - penniless gambler and some time dancer postpones his wedding to try his luck in New York and winds up falling in love with a dance instructor - exists solely in the service of four virtuosic dance sequences which have come to be regarded as unalloyed masterpieces. Astaire's rendition of The Way You Look Tonight, written by Dorothy Fields and the film's composer, Jerome Kerns, wins the the Oscar for Best Original Song.
