Hard Times (a.k. Streetfighter), written by debuting director Walter Hill, opens in NY. Set in Depression-era Louisiana, Charles Bronson is at his most enigmatic and laconic as a drifter eking out a living as a bare knuckle brawler. James Coburn is the glib, fast-talking hustler/promoter playing fast and loose alongside his shambolic "cut man" Strother Martin. A lean, period perfect, masterly composed tale of survival grounded in an almost mythic Western aesthetic.
