Never Say Never Again, directed by Irvin Kirshner, opens nationally. Written by Lorenzo Semple Jr, with uncredited input from Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, the film is a non-Eon produced independent remake of Thunderball from 1965. As a favour to producer Kevin McClory, who retained the rights to this one Bond film, Sean Connery reprises his signature role opposite Klaus Maria Brandauer, Kim Basinger and Max von Sydow as Blofeld. Though sorely missing the iconic Bond intro and theme, as well as the franchise's familar faces (because of copyright restrictions), Connery's star power carries the film to box-office success.
