Scripted by Phillip Dunne from the 1939 novel by Richard Llewellyn, and directed by John Ford, How Green Was My Valley premieres in New York. Set in a Welsh mining village at the turn of the century, the film chronicles the hardscrabble life and loves of a large coal-mining family as the winds of industrial change start to impose profound changes upon its once bucolic lifestyle. Led by a stellar cast that includes Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O’Hara, Donald Crisp and Roddy McDowell, the film wins Oscars for Best Director, Best Film, Best Supporting Actor (Crisp), Best B&W Cinematography (Arthur Miller) and Best Art Direction.
