Written by Stewart Stern, from a screen story penned by Irving Shulman and director Nicholas Ray, Rebel Without A Cause premieres in Los Angeles. In the most iconic role of his three film career, James Dean is method perfect as the angst-ridden, emotionally confused teenager whose fractious relationship with his father coupled with his attitudinal non-comformity conspire to plunge him and his two new classmates (played by Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo) into a life-changing tragedy. Sparking considerable controversy upon its release, the film presciently predates the millenium’s profusion of so-called YA movies by more than half a decade.
