The Taking of Pelham One Two Three,  directed by Joseph Sargent, from a screenplay written by Peter Stone, based on the same-titled novel by John Godey, opens in New York. Robert Shaw stars as the leader of a four man gang that hijacks the titular, commuter-packed  NY subway train demanding a one million dollar ransom. Walter Matthau plays the NY transit cop negotiating the escalating crisis. A gritty, classic seventies New York-flavoured thriller with a great WTF ending. Co-starring Martin Balsam and Hector Elizondo.
