The world premiere of Dances With Wolves is held in Washington D.C. Adapted by Michael Blake from his same-titled 1988 book, Kevin Costner produces, directs and stars as a Union Army lieutenant who, in 1863, is sent to man a deserted army fort on the furthest reaches of the western frontier where he gradually forms a familial bond with the local Sioux Indian community. Co-starring Mary McDonnell, Graham Greene and Rodney Grant, the film is a box-office hit, winning six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director (Costner), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score (John Barry).
