Written and directed by the estimable Joseph L. Mankiewicz, All About Eve premieres in New York. In her late career-defining, Oscar-winning role, Bette Davis is mesmerizing as the abrasive, preening Margot Channing, an ageing Broadway star whose ego-driven insecurities and self-assured hubris blind her to the manipulative medacity of the star-struck ingenue she takes under her wing. Anne Baxter, Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill, a scene-stealing George Sanders and, in a bit part, an unknown Marilyn Monroe alternately twist and turn in the slip-stream of Davis’ tour-de-force performance.
