The actor Yves Montand dies from a heart attack in Senlis, France at the age of 70. Born in Italy in 1921 as Ivo Livi, he emigrates with his family first to Marseille and then Paris where he is discovered by Edith Piaf who sets him on the road to stardom as a crooner and actor. In 1951 he marries actress Simone Signoret, and in 1953 stars in Henri-Georges Clouzot’s classic, nihilistic thriller The Wages of Fear. High profile roles in US films Let’s Make Love (1960) opposite Marilyn Monroe and On A Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970) with Barbra Streisand alert him to an international audience. Other prestigious entries on his resume include Costa -Gavras’ Z (1969), Jean-Pierre Melville’s The Red Circle (1970) and Claude Berri’s celebrated diptych Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources. His dies after completing work on Jean-Jacques Beiniex's The Island of Pachyderms.
