Daniel Mann’s lurid melodrama BUtterfield 8 is released. Written by John Michael Hayes and Charles Schnee from the 1935 novel by John O’Hara, Elizabeth Taylor stars as a high class call girl who vows to abandon her unsavory lifestyle when she finds herself falling for a wealthy executive (Lawrence Harvey) who is unaware of her "profession". Loudly denounced by Taylor as a piece of crap which she was contractually obliged to make, the film, to everyone’s surprise, wins her a Best Actress Oscar and becomes one of MGM’s biggest hits of the year.
