Daniel Mann’s lurid melodrama BUtterfield 8 is released. Written by John Michael Hayes and Charles Schnee from the 1935 novel by John O’Hara, Elizabeth Taylor stars as a promiscuous clothes model who vows to abandon her one-night-stand lifestyle when she finds herself falling in love with a wealthy executive (Lawrence Harvey) who is unaware of her unsavory bed-hopping past. Loudly denounced by Taylor as a piece of crap which she was purportedly obliged to make in order to get Cleopatra released, the film, to everyone’s surprise, wins her a Best Actress Oscar and becomes one of MGM’s biggest hits of the year.
