BUTTERFIELD 8 opens. Directed by Daniel Mann from a screenplay byJohn Michael Hayes and Charles Schnee, based on the 1935 novel by John O’Hara, Lurid melodrama starring Elizabeth Taylor as a high class call girl who vows to abandon her whoring way when she finds herself falling for a wealthy executive (Lawrence Harvey) who is unaware of her "profession". Loudly denounced by Taylor as a piece of crap which she was contractually obliged to make, the film, to everyone’s surprise, wins her a Best Actress Oscar and becomes one of MGM’s biggest hits of the year.
