November 29 1945

Written by Charles Brackett and director Billy Wilder, The Lost Weekend premieres in New York. Ray Milland stars in a tour-de-force performance as a struggling writer and recovering alcoholic who, despite the best efforts of his girlfriend and brother (Jane Wyman and Phillip Terry), falls off the wagon with a self-destructive, four day bender that carries him through a succession of seedy bars, gin joints, pawn shops and hospital metal wards. A grim, uncompromising portrait of addiction that wins Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Screenplay, along with the Palme d’Or at the 1946 Cannes Film Festival.
