Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters Of The Third Kind premieres in New York. Richard Dreyfus stars as an electrical lineman who discovers that his discombobulating close encounter one night with a dive-bombing UFO is all part of a peaceful alien plan designed to offer a diverse selection of earthlings the opportunity to experience life among an advanced civilization on a distant planet. Replete with bravura, often numinous set-pieces, the film plays as a buff’s affectionate multiplex tip-of-the-hat to any number of the no-budget, sci-fi B pictures that were a staple of every grindhouse and drive-in during the 50s and 60s. Co-starring Teri Garr, Melinda Dillon and Francois Truffaut.
