Raging Bull, Martin Scorsese’s black and white tour-de-force based on the life of middleweight boxing champ Jake LaMotta, premieres in New York. Adapted from LaMotta’s memoir by Paul Schrader and Mardik Martin, Robert DeNiro is a bulldozing force of nature in a warts-and-all portrait graphically contrasting the pugnacious pugilist's brutal ring encounters with his toxic relationship with his long-suffering wife and brother. DeNiro wins the Best Actor Oscar and Thelma Schoonmaker wins for Best Editing. Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty shine in key supporting roles.
