Written by John Hughes and directed by Christopher Columbus, Home Alone premieres in Chicago. When he is advertently left behind after his parents and siblings fly off to Paris for a Christmas break, eight year-old Kevin McAllister (Macaulay Culkin) is suddenly forced to switch to full Road Runner defence mode when two low-thread-count Wile E. Coyote wannabes (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) arrive to burgle his family home. Built around an endlessly inventive collection of cartoonishly violent skirmishes where cans of paint, ball bearings, tool-boxes and other household items become unlikely weapons of mass mayhem and mirth, the film is a huge box-office success, holding the number one spot for 12 straight weeks.
