After languishing in development hell for over 25 years, Spiderman, the first film in a planned trilogy directed by Sam Raimi, opens nationwide. Written by David Koepp (with uncredited imput from James Cameron, Scott Rosenberg and Alvin Sargent), Toby Maguire stars as Peter Parker, a put-upon young teen who is suddenly endowed with web-spinning super-powers after being bitten by a genetically-engineered spider. Featuring Kirsten Dunst as Parker's girlfriend, Cliff Robertson and Rosemary Harris as his parents, and Willem Dafoe as the villainous Green Goblin, the film is a huge critical and commercial success, earning in excess of $100 million over its three day opening weekend.
