The Missouri Breaks, directed by Arthur Penn, from a screenplay by Thomas McGuane, premieres in New York. Idiosyncratic, often violent revisionist Western set in Montana in the 1880s starring a rascally Jack Nicholson as the de-facto leader of gang of horse thieves forced into a deadly face-off with Marlon Brando's deceptively eccentric, lethally efficient regulator.
