The Missouri Breaks, directed by Arthur Penn, from a screenplay by Thomas McGuane, premieres in New York. Set in Montana in the 1880s, Jack Nicholson stars as the de-facto leader of a gang of horse thieves and cattle rustlers whose incendiary "eye for an eye" murder standoff with a local land baron.becomes even bloodier when the rancher hires a mercenary frontier "regulator" (Marlon Brando) to take the outlaws out by whatever brutal means necessary. An offbeat, violence-prone, revisionist Western with fresh Oscar winner Nicholson gamely jostling for head room with Brando's untethered, playful eccentricty.
