Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, directed by John Hough, from a screenplay written by Leigh Chapman and Antonio Santean, based in the novel The Chase (a.k.a. Pursuit) by Richard Unekis, opens in theaters and drive-ins across the country. Peter Fonda and Adam Roarke star as a couple of motor-heads whose plans to fund their entry into the NASCAR bigtime with the proceeds of a supermarket heist quickly go south when a sly local sheriff (Vic Morrow) mobilises his resources and gives chase. With a former girlfriend (Susan George) in tow, the trio's reckless, high speed flight (and subsequent date with destiny) in a souped-up Dodge Charger - exploited by director Hough with uncommon elan and vigor - contributes significantly to the film's box-office success.
