THE LONG GOODBYE opens in LA, Chicago, Philadelphia and Miami. Directed by Robert Altman. Screenplay by Leigh Brackett, from the novel by Raymond Chandler. Music by John Williams. Altman's "satire in melancholy" relocates Chandler's hard-boiled, very 1940s-sensible private eye to a 1970s neo-noir Hollywood flush with Me Generation boomers. Elliot Gould oozes laid-back, befuddled cool. With Sterling Hayden, Nina van Pallant and Mark Rydell. Arnold Schwarzenegger in non-speaking bit part.
