Adapted for the screen by Evan Hunter (a popular crime fiction author who often wrote under the nom de plume Ed McBain) from Daphne du Maurier’s 1952 short story, Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds premieres at New York’s Museum Of Modern Art. Rod Taylor heads the cast as a criminal attorney whose visit with his mother and estranged girlfriend at a small, seaside town in northern California turns into a terrifying struggle for survival when thousands of birds suddenly lay violent seige to the village and its inhabitants. Co-starring Tippi Hedren, Suzanne Pleshette and Jessica Tandy, the film gives Hitchcock his last substantial box-office success before his artistic decline begins to manifest itself in his subsequent five films.
