Directed by Frank Perry, from a screenplay written by novelist Thomas McGuane, Rancho Deluxe opens in only a handful of theatres. Set in modern-day Montana, Jeff Bridges and Sam Waterston star as a couple of bored young slackers who get shaken out of their complacency when the wealthy rancher whose cattle the pair have been rustling dispatches two of his wranglers and a crack stock detective to track them down. A disarmingly sly, laid-back “modern” Western enlivened by a supporting cast that includes Harry Dean Stanton, Clifton James, Elizabeth Ashley and a scene-stealing Slim Pickens.
