THE ITALIAN JOB opens in London. Directed by Peter Collinson, from a screenplay written by Troy Kennedy Martin. Michael Caine stars as an incorrigable small time crook who heads up a team of like cockney reprobates on a mission to the northern Italian city of Turin to heist a fortune in gold bullion. A hugely entertaining, quintessentially sixties British crime caper featuring some nimble, cult-worthy wheel-work from three charismatic Mini Coopers, and capped with the most literal of cliffhanger endings. The supporting cast includes Benny Hill, Raf Vallone, Maggie Blye, and the estimable Noel Coward. An inferior, pointless remake is released in 2003 starring Mark Wahlberg and Edward Norton.
