The Seven Year Itch, bowdlerized albiet captivating adaptation of George Axelrod's three act Broadway play, premieres in New York. Tom Ewell reprises his stage role as a strait-laced nine-to-fiver who, after seven years of marital domestication, suddenly finds himself fantasising all manner of libidinous mischief when he becomes infatuated with a voluptuous, very single blonde bombshell (Marilyn Monroe) from the upstairs apartment. Dismissed by a chagrined Wilder, the film, though a moderate success, will forever be remembered for its iconic image of Monroe and her dress billowing over a subway grate.
