Escape From Alcatraz, directed by Don Siegel, opens nationally. Written by Richard Tuggle, from the same-titled 1963 novel by J. Campbell Bruce, the film offers a rivetting account of the circumstances surrounding the 1962 escape of three maximum security inmates from San Francisco's famed Alcatraz prison. A finely honed, quietly gripping thriller sublimated by an economy of style perfectly complemented by star Clint Eastwood's stoic resolve. One of the best films of the year. With Fred Ward, Jack Thibeau and Patrick McGoohan.
