Capricorn One, written and directed by Peter Hyams, opens nationally. James Brolin, Sam Waterston and O. J. Simpson star as three NASA astronauts who find themselves at the centre of a sinister government conspiracy after they are abruptly removed from the space-craft that is about to take them to Mars and whisked off to an isolated, desert facility where, on a huge sound stage dominated by a replica of their landing module, they are coerced to enact their landing on Mars to a waiting television audience. A smart, sci-fi-tinged action thriller inspired, no doubt, by the myriad conspiracy theories relating to NASA's 1969 moon landing. Elliott Gould co-stars as a dogged journalist who risks his life to expose the elaborate fraud.
