The Driver, written and directed by Walter Hill, premieres. Ryan O'Neal is the eponymous Driver, the best getaway wheelman in Los Angeles and Bruce Dern is The Detective obsessed with his capture. With Isabelle Adjani as The Player and Ronee Blakely as The Connection completing the existential quartet, the stage is set for a stripped down, richly atmospheric, neo-noir thriller where neon-lit streets and the screech and smell of burning rubber line up in perfect synch with the cool detachment of its inscrutable protagonists. Melville would have approved. A box-office failure upon its release, but now rightfully considered to be a true classic.
