THE LAST AMERICAN HERO (a.k.a Hard Driver), opens. Directed by Lamont Johnson, from a screenplay written by William Roberts and William Kerby, based on Tom Wolfe's 1965 Esquire article. An excellent Jeff Bridges stars in the real-life story of one Junior Johnson (here renamed Jackson), a feckless North Carolina good 'ol boy who parlays his driving skills, honed delivering moonshine for his father, into a lucrative career on the demolition derby and NASCAR circuit. A resonant, perceptive ode to individualism with outstanding work from co-stars Gary Busey, Art Lund and Valerie Perrine. Jim Croce's theme song, I Got A Name, becomes a number hit.
