Midnight Run, directed by Martin Brest from a screenplay by George Gallo, opens nationally. Robert De Niro stars as an ex-cop turned bounty hunter tasked with escorting a wily, bail-jumping Mob accountant (Charles Grodin) responsible for embezzling some $15 million from his employer, back to his bail bondsman in Los Angeles. As the two men bicker and bond on their cross country odyssey, a bumbling FBI agent, a Chicago crime boss and a cantankerous rival bounty hunter pull out all stops to hunt the pair down. A witty, winning road cum buddy movie with the irrascible De Niro a perfect foil for Grodin's specialised brand of neurotic superciliousness. The outstanding supporting cast includes Yaphet Kotto, John Ashton, Dennis Farina and Joe Pantoliano.
