Written by Jimmy Sangster from a story by Anthony Hinds, and directed by Hammer journeyman Terrence Fisher, Dracula, Prince Of Darkness, a direct sequel to Horror Of Dracula from 1958, premieres in London. The third entry in Hammer’s Dracula series and the second to star Christopher Lee as the eponymous Count, the story is set in an appropriately dripping-with-forboding Gothic castle deep in the Carpathian mountains where four clueless (and witless) travellers barely have time to check out their accommodation before they are summarily recruited as unwilling blood donors in the service of Dracula’s spectacular resurrection. An atmospheric but perfunctorily plotted sequel enlivened only by the odd guoulish set-piece. Barbara Shelley, Andrew Keir and Charles Tingwell co-star.
