Lifeboat, written by Jo Swerling, from a story by John Steinbeck, opens nationally. Tullulah Bankhead, William Bendix, John Hodiak and Walter Slezak lead an impressive, ensemble cast in Alfred Hitchcock's lesser-known but enthralling, quasi-allegorical chamber piece/character study set entirely on a lifeboat carrying nine survivors of an Allied passenger ship's fatal mid-Atlantic encounter with German u-boat.
