Adapted for the screen by the estimable William Goldman from the novel by the equally estimable Donald E. Westlake, Peter Yates' breezy heist caper, The Hot Rock, premieres in New York. Robert Redford is John Dortmunder, a recidivist thief who teams up with his no-good brother-in-law and two other reprobates to steal a precious gem from a Brooklyn museum. As each best laid plan inevitably starts to go astray, the bungling, wise-guy cat burglars soon discover that stealing the gem proves to be much easier than actually keeping it in their possession. George Segal, Ron Liebman and Paul Sand co-star.
