Adapted for the screen by the estimable William Goldman from the novel by the equally estimable Donald E. Westlake, Peter Yates' breezy heist caper, The Hot Rock, premieres in New York. Robert Redford is John Dortmunder, a just-released professional thief who quickly reverts to his default recividist behavior when an ambassador from an African country hires him, his no-good brother-in-law and two other reprobates to steal a precious gem which is temporarily on display at a Brooklyn museum. As each best laid plan inevitably starts to go astray, the wise-guy cat burglars soon discover that stealing the gem proves to be much easier than actually keeping it in their possession. George Segal, Ron Liebman and Paul Sand co-star.
