Steven Soderbergh’s  muscular, retro-styled  action thriller Haywire premieres. Written by Lem Dobbs, who previously worked with Soderbergh on The Limey and Kafka, Gina Carano, a real life mixed martial arts fighter, puts her formidable talent to good use as a covert, black op agent who embarks on a kick-ass, continent-hopping revenge mission after surviving an assassination attempt. Though it trades in familiar double-crossed-agent-looking-for-payback tropes, the film’s sin qua non are the brutal, spectacularly choreographed, spatially astute fight sequences which Soderbergh, maximizing Carano’s inherent skills, shoots sans music, using mostly wide shots with minimum cutting. The high profile supporting cast includes Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas and Bill Paxton.
