Actor, singer, producer and director Dick Powell dies in Los Angeles from lung cancer at the age of 58. Born in Arkansas, Powell stars in a slew of popular musical comedies during the 1930s before segueing in the early 1940s to more hardboiled leading man roles with noir classics Murder, My Sweet (as Philip Marlowe), Cornered, Johnny O’Clock and Pitfall. In the 1950s he is one of the founders of Four Star Television and becomes a regular on some the company’s numerous programs, including the series Dick Powell’s Zane Grey Theater (CBS) and The Dick Powell Show (NBC). His wife at the time of his death is actress June Allyson.
