Curtis Hanson’s The Hand That Rocks The Cradle opens. As scripted by Amanda Silver, Rebecca De Mornay is chillingly repellant as an embitted young woman who, under the guise of a nanny, unleashes a concerted terror campaign against the yuppie couple she holds responsible for the suicide death of her husband and her own subsequent miscarriage. An efficient, shrewdly calculated urban thriller, methodically elbowing its essentially exploitative B-picture conceits toward a gangbuster finale. Co-starring Annabella Sciorra, Matt McCoy, Julianne Moore and Ernie Hudson, the film is a huge commercial success holding the number one slot at the box-office for four consecutive weeks.
