THE MISFITS opens. Directed by John Huston. Written by Arthur Miller. Despairingly melancholic rumination on disillusion & disempowerment with Marilyn Monroe as fragile divorcee who falls in with Clark Gable's ageing cowboy & Montgomery Clift's laconic rodeo rider roping Mustangs in the Nevada desert. Gable and Monroe's last film: he dies of a heart attack 2 months before the film's release and Monroe of a barbiturate overdose 18 months later. Clift dies in 1966. Eli Wallach co-stars.
