Written by Steven Gaghan, reworking Simon Moore’s superb mini-series Traffik from 1989, and directed by Steven Soderbergh, Traffic premieres in New York. Headlined by a prestigious cast that includes, Michael Douglas, Benicio Del Toro, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Don Cheedle and Dennis Quaid, the film adopts a three-prong narrative to cast a jaundiced eye on the nation's so-called war on drugs told from the perspective of two Mexican cops facing off against the Juarez drug cartel, a newly appointed US drug czar, and a ballsy San Diego trophy wife looking to expand her husband’s drug import operation after he is arrested by the DEA. Released to wide critical acclaim, the film wins Academy Awards for Best Director, Best Supporting Actor (Del Toro), Best Screenplay and Best Editing.
