Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down opens nationally. Scripted by Ken Nolan from journalist Mark Bowden’s non-fiction book, the film unfolds over a 24 hour period on October 3 1993 in Somalia’s capital city of Mogadishu where over 100 US Army rangers are helicoptered in to capture a local Somali warlord’s key henchmen. Underestimating the resourcefulness of the Somalian guerillas, who manage to bring down two Black Hawk helicopters, the outnumbered and outgunned Rangers must survive a bloody, backs-to-the-wall, all-night fire-fight before they can find their way back to base. A bravura piece of filmmaking, staggering in the verimisilitude of its logistics, and featuring knockout performances from Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, Eric Bana, Tom Sizemore and Sam Shepard. The film wins Oscars for Best Editing and Best Sound.
