Written by Jack Whittingham, John Hopkins and Richard Maibaum, and directed by Terence Young, Ian Fleming's Thunderball, the fourth James Bond adventure, opens nationally. This time around Bond travels to the Bahamas in search of two atomic bombs which SPECTRE has hijacked from a downed NATO plane with the intention of obliterating a major US city. With the estimable Sean Connery headlining a cast that includes regulars Bernard Lee, Lois Maxwell and Desmond Llewellyn, as well as euro-exotic newcomers Adolfo Celi, Claudine Auger and Luciana Paluzzi, the film is a huge international success, sending Tom Jones’ memorable title song, written by composer John Barry and Don Black, to the top of the charts.
