Written by John Gregory Dunne, Joan Didion and director Frank Pierson, the third iteration of A Star Is Born premieres. Kris Kristofferson is the hard-drinking, substance-abusing rock star watching his career self-destruct while his protégé and later wife, played by Barbra Streisand, becomes a singing sensation. Despite the pre-release publication of director Pierson's non too flattering account of the endless behind-the scenes turmoil that threatened to derail the production (purportedly caused by Streisand and her then boyfriend/producer Jon Peters), the film goes on to become the third highest grossing release of the year, and wins a Best Song Academy Award for Streisand’s Evergreen.
